1 January 2003 - new prefix for mobile calls

From 1 January 2003, all calls from other nations to Argentina mobile numbers include a prefix digit '9' before the area code.

That is, to reach an Argentina mobile number, dialling format after international prefix is:

+54 + 9 + area code + subscriber number (without '15' prefix)

Mobile numbers in Argentina may be listed as 15-xxxxxxx. However, the leading '15' is a domestic prefix which must be omitted when calling these from outside Argentina, with the xxxxxxx being the actual subscriber number portion.

24 January 1999 - National renumbering

Effective 24 January 1999, a major renumbering affects all telephone numbers in Argentina:

1) The digit 4 will be added before subscriber numbers.

2) One digit will be added before area codes:

  • 1 before the Federal Capital (Buenos Aires) area
  • 2 before southern areas under Telefonica's operation
  • 3 before northern areas under Telecom's operation

Further information is available from Telefonica.

A permissive dialling period allowed calling through either the old or new numbering until 24 April 1999.

24 December 1999 - extra 2 digits for 06xx, 08xx service

As of 24 December 1999, numbers on non-geographic services such as 0610, 0800 and 0810 were expanded by two digits by twice repeating the digit that follows the service code. For example: 0800 3 4567 became 0800 333 4567. That is, 5-digit numbers following the service code (0610, 0800, 0810) became 7-digit numbers.

27 November 1998 - Uruguay dialling arrangements discontinued

Calls from Argentina to certain Uruguay places previously used special area codes as allocated within the domestic network. These arrangements were discontinued in favour of international dialling format using 00 + 598 as of 27 November 1998.

The following table indicates the affected Uruguay points, with the former and new access codes as would be dialled from Argentina:

Uruguay place    Former access    New access
=============    =============    ==========
Colonia          0222-            00-598-52-
La Barra         0842-            00-598-42-
Maldonado        0842-            00-598-42-
Montevideo       059 -            00-598-2-
Punta del Este   0842-            00-598-42-

24 January 1999 - various service changes

Conference call service code changed from 0747 to 0607 on 24 January 1999. The previous 5-digit number following the service code was also expanded to 7 digits by twice repeating the service number's leading digit. e.g. 0747 1 2345 became 0607 111 2345.

Also, "Collection of Charities" lines changed code from 0939 to 0605. The previous 5-digit number following 0939 was expanded to a 7-digit number following 0605, by twice repeating the number's lead digit similar to the change for Conference call service above e.g. 0939 1 7676 became 0605 111 7676.

Memobox messaging service access also changed from 123 to *123 on 24 January 1999 (asterisk now precedes the '123').
