All telephone numbers in the Czech Republic became standard 9-digit national numbers. All 9 digits must be dialled for local and long distance calls. The '0' trunk prefix digit was eliminated in this process.

28 Feb 1997: new country code 420

Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Country code 42 was assigned to Czechoslovakia by ITU in the early 1960s.

Effective 28 February 1997, a split of country code 42 took effect:

Czech Republic: country code 420
Slovak Republic: country code 421
