30 September 2012 - mobile area code expansion

Area codes of mobile numbers changed to new +593 9x format. Mobile subscriber numbers remain unchanged, while '9' was prepended to the area code digit. This updates the previous numbering plan expansion proposal.

2008 - national renumbering plans, new digit for area codes

Ecuador's numbering plan is expected to expand by another digit on a date to be determined. Implementation was delayed from a previously reported date of 16 March 2008.

The existing single-digit area codes will become 2-digit codes, prepending a digit according to type of service and region. This change was originally approved in Conatel Resolution 349-17, 14 June 2007, with an announcement in April 2008 that the implementation date was "under study".

28 September 2003 - national renumbering

Ecuador completed this phase of national renumbering on 28 September 2003 when remaining 6-digit subscriber numbers are expanded to 7-digit numbers by prepending digit '2'.

The 1-digit area code remains in place, followed by a consistent 7-digit subscriber number format throughout Ecuador after 28 September 2003. This phase of changes took effect in the following places:

2 September 2001 - renumbering for Guayas and Pichincha, mobile

Fixed line subscribers in Guayas (area code 4 or +593 4) and Pichincha (area code 2 or +593 2) had the digit '2' prepended to the existing 6-digit subscriber numbers on 2 September 2001. There was no indication of a permissive period for this change.

Also on this date, the digit '9' was prepended to all cellular subscriber numbers in Ecuador, to form 7-digit cellular numbers while retaining the existing cellular area code 9.

In domestic format:

(04) xxxxxx became (04) 2xxxxxx
(09) xxxxxx became (09) 9xxxxxx

In international format:

+593 2 xxxxxx became +593 2 2xxxxxx

+593 9 xxxxxx became +593 9 9xxxxxx

Other Ecuador area codes (3, 5, 6, 7) will be affected by a subsequent series of changes. Timing details were unavailable as of October 2001.
