Numbering range information

July 1997 China takeover

Hong Kong is now a territory by China as of July 1997. However, the separate country code 852 remains in use for Hong Kong. There is no word yet whether Hong Kong will be integrated into China's numbering plan under country code 86.

1 January 1995 - '2' Day

1 January 1995: Telephone numbers were changed from 7 to 8 digits in a "2" day - the digit 2 was added before 7-digit numbers to make the new 8-digit number e.g. 9876543 became 29876543.

30 December 1989 - Area Codes eliminated

Area codes were eliminated in Hong Kong in favour of a 7-digit number format used throughout the territory. (info courtesy Warren Kwok, OFTA).
