March-August 2005 - national renumbering
Mozambique moves to a new numbering plan in 2005, as a closed numbering system.
The numbering chages were originally scheduled for January 2005, as previously announced by INCM in May 2004. However, in March 2005, INCM announced the changes would be postponed and then implemented in two phases:
1) March 2005 - mobile numbers change
Mobile carriers Mcel and Vodacom will remain as +258 82 and +258 84 respectively. National number length will be 9 digits (2-digit area code plus 7-digit mobile subscriber number).
2) August 2005 - fixed/wireline numbers change
'2' will be prepended to existing geographic area codes e.g. Beira +258 3 will become +258 23. Geographic/fixed numbers will be standardised at 8 digits (total of area code plus existing subscriber number, exclusive of prefixes and country code). These numbers belong to TDM, the existing fixed/wireline carrier.
